The Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing tougher penalties for several traffic-related offences across Nigeria.
One of the key provisions of the bill proposes a ₦50,000 fine for anyone convicted of hawking goods or preaching inside commercial buses. Lawmakers said the measure is aimed at reducing distractions for drivers and improving passenger safety.
The bill, which is still awaiting presidential assent before it becomes law, also proposes a ₦50,000 fine, a six-month jail term, or both, for drivers who refuse to take a roadside breathalyzer test when requested by FRSC officials on reasonable suspicion.
In addition, fines for several traffic offences have been increased by as much as 300 percent as part of efforts to strengthen road safety, promote compliance with traffic laws, and reduce road accidents.
The amendment also raises the penalty for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs from ₦5,000 to ₦100,000. Offenders could also face up to two years in prison, or both a fine and imprisonment, if found guilty.
The bill, officially titled the Federal Road Safety Corps Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was first read in the Senate on July 1, 2026. It will only take effect if signed into law by the President.
