Pope Leo XIV has issued a strong warning about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence in his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, urging the world to ensure technology remains guided by human dignity and moral responsibility.
In the document, the Pope describes the unchecked development of AI as a potential “new Tower of Babel,” referencing the biblical story in which humanity’s pride and ambition led to confusion and division. He warned that while AI has the power to transform society for the better, it could also deepen inequality, spread misinformation, weaken human relationships, and concentrate power in the hands of a few if left without proper ethical oversight.
The pontiff stressed that technological innovation should always serve humanity rather than replace or diminish it. He called on governments, technology companies, researchers, and global leaders to work together in creating ethical standards that protect human rights, promote justice, and preserve human freedom.
Pope Leo XIV also emphasized that wisdom, compassion, and moral judgment cannot be replicated by machines, urging people not to allow artificial intelligence to overshadow the values that define humanity.
The encyclical concludes with a call for responsible innovation, encouraging the global community to embrace technological progress while ensuring it remains rooted in respect for human life, truth, and the common good.
