Several top commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), along with 76 foot soldiers and their family members, have surrendered to Nigerian troops in the North-East following sustained military operations against the terrorist group.
Security sources disclosed that the mass surrender occurred after weeks of intensified offensives by the Nigerian military, which have continued to weaken ISWAP’s strongholds across the region.
The surrendered insurgents reportedly laid down their arms alongside their wives and children, citing relentless military pressure, dwindling supplies, and deteriorating conditions within the group’s camps as reasons for abandoning the insurgency.
Military authorities said the development is part of the ongoing success of counterterrorism operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and restoring peace to the North-East.
The surrendered fighters are expected to undergo profiling, investigation, and rehabilitation in line with the Federal Government’s deradicalisation programme, while security forces continue operations to track down remaining insurgents.
