Sapele, Delta State – Gunmen have abducted the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area, Hon. Okakuro Bright Afure Abeke, in a daring evening operation that left at least one person injured.

The incident occurred on Friday night around 7:25 pm at Debrofred Hotel (also referred to as Debroefed) along Owumi Road in Sapele. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a Range Rover vehicle and opened fire on the chairman’s security detail before whisking him away to an unknown destination.

According to multiple local reports, the gunmen shot and injured a vigilante identified as Ufuoma and one other person during the attack. The chairman was reportedly taken from the hotel premises amid the chaos.

Hon. Bright Afure Abeke, who had recently been involved in efforts to combat insecurity in the area—including distributing security equipment to vigilantes and pledging zero tolerance for kidnapping—has now become a victim of the very crime he was fighting.

As of Saturday morning, there has been no official statement from the Delta State Police Command confirming the abduction or detailing rescue efforts, though a manhunt is believed to be underway. Residents of Sapele have expressed shock and concern over the rising insecurity in the region.

This latest incident adds to ongoing worries about safety in parts of Delta State, where kidnappings and armed attacks continue to pose serious challenges for public officials and ordinary citizens alike.

Authorities are urged to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of the council chairman and bring the perpetrators to justice. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
