Amnesty Condemns Benue Easter Attack, Blames Authorities for Security Failures

News Trending

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the deadly attack that occurred during Easter celebrations in Benue State, where suspected gunmen killed at least 10 people.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, the rights group criticized the Nigerian government for what it described as a continued failure to protect citizens from recurring violence. According to Amnesty, the attack highlights ongoing security lapses that have left communities vulnerable despite repeated warnings and previous incidents.

The organization noted that residents in parts of Benue and other regions have faced persistent threats from armed groups, yet authorities have not taken sufficient proactive measures to prevent such tragedies. It stressed that the loss of lives during a significant religious celebration underscores the urgency for improved security strategies.

Amnesty International called on the government of Nigeria to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. It also urged authorities to strengthen protection for at-risk communities and address the root causes of the violence.

The group warned that without decisive action, such attacks could continue, further deepening fear and instability among civilians.
