A French soldier has been killed in a drone strike in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Friday. The soldier, identified as Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion, 42, was killed while stationed at a training facility near Erbil. Six other French soldiers were wounded in the attack.
French military officials say the strike involved an Iranian-designed drone, though investigations into its exact origin are ongoing. Macron condemned the attack as “unacceptable,” stressing that France’s presence in Iraq is strictly defensive, focused on training local forces to combat terrorism.
The attack comes amid rising regional tensions and a series of strikes by Iran-backed militias targeting coalition forces in northern Iraq. One group, Ashab Al-Kahf, claimed responsibility and warned of further attacks on French interests.
France currently has around 600 troops in Iraq, primarily involved in counter-terrorism and training operations. Macron has ordered a full military review of the incident as France assesses its ongoing role in the volatile Middle East region
