The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has recorded an estimated ₦650 million in losses following three major fire outbreaks that occurred within a 32-hour period.
According to the Federal Fire Service (FFS), the incidents were largely caused by electrical power surges, which triggered fires in different locations across the FCT. Properties affected included shops, residential buildings, and business premises, with goods worth hundreds of millions of naira destroyed.
The Fire Service confirmed that its operatives responded promptly to the emergencies and were able to prevent the fires from spreading further, thereby averting even greater losses. However, despite their swift intervention, significant damage had already been done before the fires were brought under control.
The FFS warned residents and business owners to take fire safety more seriously, especially during periods of unstable power supply. It advised the use of surge protectors, regular inspection of electrical wiring, and switching off appliances when not in use.
Authorities also urged the public to promptly report fire incidents and adhere strictly to safety guidelines to reduce the risk of future outbreaks.
