The Edo State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old suspect for allegedly staging his own abduction in a bid to extort ₦10 million from his family.
According to police sources, the teenager reportedly conspired with accomplices to fake his kidnapping and demanded ransom from his relatives, claiming he had been abducted by unknown gunmen. Acting on intelligence and sustained investigation, operatives uncovered inconsistencies in the case and eventually exposed the plot, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
During interrogation, the police said the teenager confessed to orchestrating the fake abduction after pressure mounted on him to account for his whereabouts. He also allegedly provided information that helped security operatives track down other individuals connected to similar criminal activities.
In a separate operation, the Edo State Police Command also arrested 11 other suspects linked to various crimes across the state. The suspects were apprehended during raids carried out as part of ongoing efforts to curb kidnapping, robbery, and other criminal acts.
The police disclosed that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that all suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The command also warned youths against engaging in criminal activities, stressing that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
