The UK Metropolitan Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old Nigerian national, John Temitope Onetufo, in London on New Year’s Eve.
Police said officers were called to reports of a stabbing late on December 31, where they found Mr Onetufo with serious injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.
Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have launched a murder investigation and confirmed that two individuals have been taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in the attack. They remain in police custody while inquiries continue.
In a brief statement, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time. Officers are working tirelessly to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident, and we urge anyone with information to come forward.”
Friends and members of the Nigerian community in the UK have described Mr Onetufo as a young man with a promising future, expressing shock and grief over his death. Tributes have continued to pour in on social media, with many calling for justice and improved safety.
Police have appealed to witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the incident, or who may have relevant CCTV, dashcam, or mobile phone footage, to contact investigators. Authorities emphasized that even seemingly minor details could prove crucial.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates are expected as detectives piece together the events leading up to the fatal stabbing.
