The Nigerian Navy has successfully rescued 20 crew members after a vessel caught fire along the Oron–Calabar waterway in Cross River State.
The incident occurred after the Navy received a distress call from MV Chimba Express, which reportedly went up in flames while navigating the busy inland water route. Naval operatives were immediately deployed to the scene to carry out a coordinated rescue operation.
All 20 crew members aboard the vessel were safely evacuated and accounted for, with no fatalities recorded. Some of the rescued sailors reportedly sustained minor injuries and were attended to after the operation.
The Navy also worked to contain the fire and prevent further damage or environmental hazards along the waterway. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, but investigations are expected to determine what led to the incident.

Commending the swift response, authorities reiterated the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maritime safety and the protection of lives and property on the nation’s waterways.
