Forty-four federal lawmakers have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider a political solution to the ongoing tensions in Nigeria’s South-East region. In a joint statement, the lawmakers urged the president to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, as part of efforts to restore peace, promote reconciliation, and strengthen national unity.
The legislators emphasized that addressing the region’s concerns through dialogue rather than force would help ease unrest, foster trust, and prevent further conflicts.
They called on all stakeholders, including the federal government and regional leaders, to engage in meaningful discussions aimed at lasting solutions.
“The South-East remains a vital part of our nation, and sustainable peace can only be achieved through inclusive political dialogue. We therefore urge the federal government to adopt a measured approach that prioritizes reconciliation and national cohesion,” the lawmakers stated.
The appeal comes amid rising tensions in parts of the South-East, where security challenges and political unrest have heightened calls for urgent engagement between the government and regional groups.
