Washington, D.C. — The U.S. House of Representatives has raised the alarm over escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria, describing the country as “one of the most dangerous places on Earth to follow Christ.”
In a statement released Saturday, the House Appropriations Committee expressed deep concern over recent reports of attacks on Christian communities, schools, and churches. The warning follows discussions during a congressional roundtable led by Representative Robert Aderholt, where experts highlighted the growing threats posed by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Since 2009, tens of thousands of Christians in Nigeria have been killed, and countless others displaced, as targeted attacks on villages, schools, and churches have intensified. Lawmakers noted that recent incidents — including abductions and mass killings — underscore the ongoing risks faced by religious minorities.
Members of Congress are now pushing for stronger U.S. diplomatic and legislative responses. Among the measures under consideration is designating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), which would allow the U.S. government to impose sanctions or conditions on aid to pressure the Nigerian government to protect minority communities.
The committee’s warning signals increasing international scrutiny of Nigeria’s handling of sectarian violence and could lead to heightened U.S. engagement in efforts to ensure the safety and rights of Christians in the country.
