Vice President Kashim Shettima has praised the pivotal role of the Igbo community in Nigeria’s unity, economic development, and national advancement, describing them as “the greatest stakeholders in the Nigerian project.”
Speaking on the enterprising spirit and nationwide presence of Ndigbo, Shettima highlighted their significant contributions to commerce and national cohesion. “Abuja is owned by the Igbo,” he said. “Half of Lagos’ population is likely Igbo. There is hardly any part of this country where you won’t find an Igbo manufacturer. If you enter a place and don’t see an Igbo person, leave that place. And if you don’t see a Hausa person, leave as well.”
He explained that these groups naturally gravitate toward opportunities, helping drive growth wherever they settle.
The Vice President appealed to leaders across Nigeria to invest more deliberately in their home regions—including the Southeast—while also supporting development nationwide. According to him, Nigeria is on the threshold of immense transformation, and inclusive growth is key.
Referencing a former President of Mauritius, Shettima reminded his audience that “one out of every four black men is a Nigerian.” He noted projections indicating that by 2050, Nigeria will surpass the United States to become the world’s third most populous nation with an estimated 440 million people. By the end of the century, he added, Nigeria is expected to emerge as the most populated country globally.
Expressing optimism about the nation’s future, the Vice President concluded:
“I am proud to call myself a Nigerian.”
