British police have rearrested an Ethiopian asylum seeker and convicted sex offender who was mistakenly released from prison, sparking outrage and embarrassment for UK authorities.

The man, whose earlier crimes had triggered anti-immigration protests across the country, was taken back into custody on Sunday following an intensive manhunt launched after his wrongful release.

Officials have not disclosed the circumstances that led to his accidental freedom, but the incident has drawn widespread criticism of the UK’s correctional and immigration systems.

The Home Office confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine how the blunder occurred and to prevent similar errors in the future. The suspect is expected to be transferred to a high-security facility pending further legal and immigration proceedings.
