The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has disowned a sit-at-home directive reportedly issued by some pro-Biafra groups ahead of the November 8 Anambra governorship election.In a statement on Tuesday by its leader, Uchenna Madu, MASSOB said it has no hand in any order asking residents of Anambra to boycott the polls, stressing that the state election must hold peacefully.
Madu said the group remains committed to the non-violent pursuit of Biafra’s independence and would not take part in any action capable of disrupting democratic processes in the South-East.He urged the people of Anambra to come out en masse to exercise their civic rights, saying participation in the election would ensure that only leaders chosen by the people emerge.
“MASSOB is not part of any sit-at-home or election boycott order. We are fully in support of the Anambra governorship election because political participation is vital for the protection and development of our people,” the statement read in part.The group also called on security agencies to maintain professionalism during the election and avoid acts that could intimidate voters or provoke violence.
