
In a press statement issued on Thursday, September 25, 2025, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, narrated that the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when Mutawakilu engaged in a heated dispute with his grandparents, reportedly over food.
According to the statement, during the course of the altercation, the suspect allegedly retrieved a sharp knife and repeatedly st@bbed his grandparents, Muhammad Dansokoto, 75, and his wife, Hadiza Tasidi, 65, inflicting multiple deep wounds on different parts of their bodies. Neighbors who heard their cries for help quickly rushed to the scene and found both victims lying in pools of blood. They were immediately transported to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, but sadly, doctors on duty confirmed them d3ad on arrival.
SP Kiyawa explained that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may have been under the influence of intoxicating substances at the time of the attack. He added that after receiving a distress call, operatives of the Dala Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly mobilized to the scene, where the suspect was subdued and arrested.

He further stated:
“The Kano State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of a tragic incident of culpable homicide reported at Dala Divisional Headquarters. On September 25, 2025, at about 09:30am, one resident of Kofar Dawanau Quarters reported that a young man, identified as Mutawakilu Ibrahim, had attacked and fatally stabbed his grandparents, namely, Muhammad Dansokoto (male), aged 75 years, and Hadiza Tasidi (female), aged 65 years, during a food-related quarrel. The victims sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to the hospital, where medical personnel sadly confirmed them d3ad. Their corpses were examined and later released to their relatives for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.”
The Police Command also disclosed that following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, sfipma, mnim, mnips, the case has been immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for thorough and discreet investigation.
SP Kiyawa assured the public that justice will be served, stressing that the suspect will be prosecuted in court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Meanwhile, the horrific incident has thrown the entire Kofar Dawanau Quarters community into mourning, with many residents expressing shock that a grandson could take the lives of the very people who nurtured him. The police have also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and useful information that can help prevent similar crimes.
