In a decisive operation against child abuse, the Public Complaints Commission (PCC), working in close collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, has rescued sixteen children who were being subjected to inhumane treatment at an unregistered orphanage in Dogongada, Lokogoma, Abuja.
The rescue followed mounting concerns from child rights activists and concerned residents who had repeatedly raised alarms about the plight of the children in the facility. According to reports, the minors were enduring severe hardship, ranging from physical and emotional abuse to neglect and poor living conditions.
When the joint task force stormed the premises, it was discovered that the so-called orphanage was operating illegally, without meeting even the most basic requirements for child welfare and protection. Investigators noted that the children had been deprived of proper nutrition, care, and education, leaving many of them in a vulnerable and traumatized state.
Following the raid, all sixteen children were immediately evacuated from the unsafe environment and placed in the custody of appropriate child protection services, where they are now receiving medical care, counseling, and support.
Authorities have since opened a full-scale investigation into the operators of the illegal orphanage, with a promise to ensure that those responsible for the maltreatment and exploitation of innocent children will face the full weight of the law.
The PCC emphasized its commitment to protecting the rights of children across Nigeria, urging the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting cases of abuse, exploitation, or neglect whenever they occur.
The development has sparked widespread conversations on social media, with many Nigerians calling for stricter monitoring and regulation of orphanages and childcare institutions in the country to prevent similar cases in the future.
