Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 28-year-old notorious armed robber and ex-convict, John Samuel, from Akwa Ibom State, after tracking him to his hideout in Epe on Friday, September 19.

According to a statement by the command’s deputy spokesperson, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the suspect, who was only recently released from prison, had on August 18 attacked a businessman, identified as Gbenga Obama, at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja. Samuel reportedly shot and injured the victim before dispossessing him of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables in broad daylight.

Oluseyi explained that CCTV footage of the incident clearly showed Samuel firing at the victim with an English pistol before snatching the jewelry, while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle to aid their escape. The businessman sustained severe gunshot wounds but has since been treated and discharged.

The police disclosed that Samuel, who previously served a six-year jail term for armed robbery, returned to violent crime immediately after his release. He is said to be notorious for shooting at his victims before robbing them. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to selling the stolen necklace for ₦4 million, far below its real market value.

The command confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of Samuel’s gang, with plans to charge them to court upon conclusion of investigations.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the operatives for their gallantry and dedication, assuring Lagos residents that discreet investigations are underway and justice will be served.
