Ibas Hands Over to Fubara as Rivers Returns to Democratic RuleRivers State has formally returned to democratic governance following the end of emergency rule, as the outgoing Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), officially handed over power to Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Wednesday.
The brief handover ceremony, held at Government House in Port Harcourt, brought to a close Ibas’s stewardship, which began after the federal government declared a state of emergency in the state earlier this year.Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, expressed gratitude for the support he received from security agencies, civil servants, and stakeholders during his tenure. He urged Rivers people to give their full backing to Governor Fubara, stressing that peace and unity were essential for the state’s stability and progress.
“My assignment here was a duty to the nation at a challenging time for Rivers State. I am deeply grateful for the cooperation extended to me, and I call on everyone to now rally behind Governor Fubara to move the state forward,”
he said.In his response, Governor Fubara commended Ibas for his service, describing his role as critical in restoring order during a turbulent period. He assured Rivers people that his administration would focus on rebuilding trust, driving economic development, and ensuring inclusive governance.
“This marks a new chapter for Rivers State. We will consolidate on the gains made and work tirelessly to deliver good governance. My priority is to heal divisions, strengthen institutions, and create opportunities for our people,” Fubara stated.The handover signals the end of months of federal control in Rivers, which had sparked debate across political circles. With Fubara now back at the helm, analysts say attention will shift to how he navigates the political landscape and addresses key challenges such as insecurity, infrastructure, and job creation.
