The House of Representatives has adopted the report on the establishment of State Police and approved 18 constitutional amendment clauses aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, governance framework, and democratic institutions.
The approval followed deliberations during plenary on Thursday as lawmakers considered a series of proposed amendments designed to address key national challenges, particularly insecurity across the country.
A major highlight of the amendments is the proposed creation of State Police, which seeks to decentralize policing by allowing states to establish and manage their own police formations. Supporters of the proposal argue that localized policing will improve intelligence gathering, enhance response times to security threats, and help tackle rising cases of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
The approved clauses also cover critical areas including judicial reforms, local government administration, legislative procedures, citizenship rights, and measures aimed at improving governance and accountability at various levels of government.
House leaders described the development as a significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s constitutional framework and addressing longstanding concerns about the country’s security and governance systems.
However, the constitutional amendment process is not yet complete. The approved proposals will still require further legislative procedures, including consideration by the Senate and ratification by at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before they can become part of the Constitution.
The move comes amid growing calls from stakeholders across the country for comprehensive reforms to strengthen security and promote effective governance.
