The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered the immediate summary trial of two police officers accused of extorting a member of the public inside the C Division Police Station in Asaba, Delta State capital.
The officers identified as Inspector Augustine Jeremiah (AP No. 262712) and Corporal Miracle Ehirim (F/No. 519970) were captured in a secretly recorded video allegedly forcing a man to make a bank transfer of ₦51,500 through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal while a uniformed officer stood beside him inside the station.
The viral video, which first surfaced on social media and was widely shared by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, sparked public outrage over alleged routine extortion practices, with claims that POS operators are sometimes stationed inside certain police stations in Delta State to facilitate on-the-spot payments from suspects and civilians.
In a swift response, CP Yemi Oyeniyi directed that the two officers face an orderly room trial on Thursday (today), with the process expected to be concluded the same day. The outcome of the trial is to be made public.
The Delta State Police Command described the video as “embarrassing” and assured that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against the officers if found guilty.
This development has reignited calls for accountability and reform within the Nigeria Police Force, as many Nigerians continue to express frustration over cases of extortion and abuse of power by some officers.
The Command has not yet released further details on the victim or the circumstances leading to the alleged extortion.
