Lagos – A 14-year-old boy, identified as Eke Miracle, was intercepted by security operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Monday, March 30, 2026, while attempting to stow away on an aircraft.
The teenager was spotted on the airport tarmac trying to gain unauthorised access beneath a plane. Airport Police Command operatives swiftly moved in and arrested him, averting what could have been a highly dangerous and potentially fatal incident.
In a statement issued by the Airport Police Command spokesperson, ASP Mohammed Adeola, the command revealed that the minor had unlawfully entered a restricted area of the airport.
“The minor was discovered on the airport tarmac while attempting to unlawfully gain access beneath an aircraft, an act which constitutes a serious breach of aviation security protocols within a highly sensitive operational environment,” the statement read.
Child Protection Protocols Activated
Following his arrest, Eke Miracle was taken into protective custody. Police authorities stated that the boy was handled with full regard to his age and welfare. His parents were immediately contacted and were present during all interviews and procedures in line with juvenile justice and child protection standards.
The Commissioner of Police for the Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, stressed the importance of safeguarding Nigeria’s airports as critical national assets. She called on parents and guardians to be more vigilant over their children, especially in high-risk areas.
“The safety and integrity of our aviation ecosystem remain paramount,” she said. The case will be processed according to juvenile justice procedures, and the minor is expected to be presented before a juvenile court.
Growing Aviation Security Concerns
This incident has once again highlighted persistent security lapses at Nigeria’s major airports. It adds to a string of recent stowaway attempts, including a man caught trying to board an Overland Airways flight in December 2025 and another incident involving a KLM flight in 2023.
Stowaway attempts are extremely life-threatening due to extreme cold, lack of oxygen, and the physical dangers posed by aircraft engines and landing gear at high altitudes. They also pose serious risks to flight safety and operations.
Authorities have vowed to further strengthen perimeter security and surveillance to prevent future breaches.
