The Rivers State House of Assembly has defended its decision to reject four commissioner-nominees submitted by the state governor, , following what lawmakers described as a thorough and transparent screening process.
The Assembly said the decision was reached after carefully evaluating the qualifications, competence, and responses provided by the nominees during their appearance before the House.
According to the lawmakers, the screening exercise was conducted in line with constitutional provisions and legislative procedures, stressing that the outcome reflected the Assembly’s responsibility to ensure that only capable individuals are appointed into key positions in the state government.
The House maintained that the rejection was not politically motivated but was based strictly on the performance of the nominees during the screening exercise. Lawmakers emphasized that the Assembly remains committed to upholding accountability and protecting the interests of the people of Rivers State.
While some of the nominees were cleared and confirmed, four failed to secure the approval of the House, effectively preventing them from joining the state executive council.
The Assembly also urged the governor to submit new nominees for consideration, assuring that the House would continue to carry out its constitutional duty objectively and without bias.
