A nail technician in Lagos has narrated the ordeal her 19-year-old brother allegedly faced after police officers accused him of selling Indian hemp at his Point-of-Sale (PoS) stand, an allegation she insists was completely false.
According to the young woman, her brother, who operates a small PoS business in their neighbourhood to support the family, was on duty when officers stormed the area during a routine patrol. She said the officers began searching nearby shops and stands before approaching her brother.
She claimed the police accused him of selling Indian hemp, despite finding no such substance on him or at his stand. “They searched his bag, his pockets and even checked around the PoS kiosk, but there was nothing,” she recounted. “Yet they insisted he was involved.”
The situation reportedly escalated when the officers allegedly demanded money to “settle” the matter. When he could not meet their demand, he was taken into custody.
The sister said her brother was detained for hours at the station without clear evidence linking him to any illegal activity. She described the experience as traumatic for the teenager, who had never been arrested before.
“He is just 19 and trying to make an honest living,” she said. “They tagged him a criminal without proof.”
Family members and neighbours reportedly intervened, insisting on his innocence and demanding his release. After repeated pleas and pressure, he was eventually freed, though the experience left the family shaken.
The nail technician called on the authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that innocent youths are not falsely accused or harassed while trying to earn a legitimate income.
The police have yet to officially respond to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
