At least five Nigerian soldiers and one police inspector have been killed following a deadly ambush by suspected terrorists in Zamfara State, north-west Nigeria. Several other security personnel sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack.
According to security sources, the incident occurred when a joint team of soldiers and police officers was ambushed while on an operational mission in a volatile area of the state. The attackers reportedly struck unexpectedly, opening fire on the patrol team and forcing a fierce exchange that resulted in casualties on the side of the security forces.
The injured personnel were said to have been evacuated to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment, while reinforcements were deployed to the area to repel the attackers and secure the location.
Zamfara State has remained one of the flashpoints of armed banditry and terrorist violence in Nigeria, with repeated attacks on communities, security formations, and travellers despite ongoing military operations.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Investigations are expected to continue as security agencies intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and restore calm to the affected area.
