The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) are at odds over the police’s announcement to resume enforcement of the suspended tinted glass permit policy from January 2, 2026.
The disagreement followed a notice issued by the police on Monday, informing motorists that vehicles with tinted glasses would require valid permits when enforcement begins. The NPF said the move is aimed at improving security and curbing crime.
However, the NBA has kicked against the plan, describing it as illegal and prone to abuse. The association warned that the policy could reopen the door to harassment and extortion of motorists by police officers, noting that similar complaints led to the earlier suspension of the permit requirement.
The NBA called on the federal government to clarify the legal status of the policy and ensure that citizens’ rights are protected before any enforcement resumes.
In response, the police insisted that the tinted glass permit policy is backed by existing laws and necessary for national security. The NPF also assured Nigerians that safeguards would be put in place to prevent misuse during enforcement.
The planned resumption has sparked public debate as Nigerians await further clarification ahead of the January 2026 enforcement date.
