The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi State, has uncovered a case of fraud involving an impostor who posed as a hospital staff member and extorted money from a patient’s relatives.
According to the hospital, the suspect deceived the victim’s family into believing that the payment was required to facilitate medical treatment. Acting on intelligence and internal monitoring, ATBUTH security personnel apprehended the impostor within the hospital premises.
The sum of ₦27,000, which had been fraudulently collected from the patient’s relatives, was fully recovered and returned to them. The hospital management confirmed that the suspect was not an employee of ATBUTH and had no authorization to demand or collect money on behalf of the institution.
ATBUTH condemned the act and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on fraud and extortion, warning members of the public to always verify the identity of anyone requesting payments in the hospital. The management also urged patients and their families to report suspicious activities to hospital authorities or security operatives immediately.
The suspect has been handed over to relevant security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.
