A Tokyo court has sentenced a former employee of one of Japan’s largest banks to nine years in prison for stealing gold bars and cash worth about $2.6 million.The court described her repeated thefts as “heinous,” noting that the crimes severely damaged public trust in financial institutions.

According to prosecutors, the ex-banker used her position to secretly remove gold and cash from the bank over an extended period before being caught.The judge emphasized that her actions were deliberate and motivated by greed, and that a harsh sentence was necessary to serve as a deterrent to others.
