35-Year-Old Businesswoman Arrested for Child Abuse in Imo State

Owerri, Imo State – A 35-year-old businesswoman, Edith Nwachukwu, was arrested on Tuesday evening, January 21st, 2025, by the Owerri Urban Divisional Police Headquarters for allegedly battering her 13-year-old house help, Kelechi Ejieke.The incident occurred at the popular Relief Market in Owerri.
The suspect was apprehended following a rescue operation initiated by concerned citizens, including an Imo-based journalist, Chidiebube Okeoma, founder of the Stand for Humanity Foundation.Okeoma, along with several market traders, witnessed the abuse and immediately alerted the police.
They intervened to prevent further harm to the child, who had sustained severe injuries.
The businesswoman allegedly accused the minor of stealing money, a claim the girl denied. Witnesses reported that the suspect had already inflicted injuries on the child and was preparing to inflict further punishment.

The Owerri Urban Divisional Police Headquarters promptly responded to the distress call.
The minor was rescued and immediately taken to a hospital in Owerri for medical treatment.
The victim, a native of Amaeke Adam in Abia State, is currently receiving medical attention.
The suspect, who pleaded for leniency at the police station, is now facing charges of child abuse.
