On Monday, June 23, in Oka-Akoko, Ondo State, Mrs. Rabiat Atere, a farmer from Uba in Oka-Akoko, was brutally murdered on her farmland.Her body, reportedly bearing machete cuts, was later found and taken to a morgue in Iwaro-Oka. A video circulating online shows her nude body at the scene.
This tragic event has ignited widespread outrage, especially among the youth. The Akoko Youth Forum (AYF), through its National President Ibukun-Oluwa Akeju, strongly condemned the killing, calling it “a direct attack on the peace and safety of our people, a threat we can no longer tolerate.” The assailants are suspected to be herdsmen.
Akeju also criticized the lack of immediate security response following the incident. He noted that despite the police evacuating Mrs. Atere’s body, no security personnel have been deployed to the area, leaving residents in fear.
The AYF is urging security agencies, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to ensure the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted, and that peace and security are restored to the affected communities.
They emphasized that “concrete measures must be taken to prevent future occurrences.”
