The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has cautioned that the release of certain records being sought in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit involving Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could put individuals connected to past investigations at serious risk.
According to court filings, the FBI argued that some of the documents contain names and identifying details of people who either participated in, assisted with, or were linked to the investigations. The agency said making such information public could expose those individuals to potential harassment, intimidation, or even violent retaliation.
The FBI maintained that federal transparency laws contain exemptions designed to protect personal privacy and the safety of individuals involved in law enforcement matters. The agency stressed that releasing sensitive information could compromise the security of those connected to the case.
