UK Councillor Charged Over Offensive Facebook Post About Nigerians

A Reform UK councillor, Glenn Gibbins, has been charged over an offensive Facebook post he made about Nigerians in 2024.

The controversial comment, posted in March 2024, read: “Can’t believe amount of Nigerians in town… should melt them all down and fill in the pot holes.” The remark sparked widespread criticism after resurfacing.

According to Politics UK, Gibbins has now been charged under the Communications Act 2003 for allegedly sending a grossly offensive message. Northumbria Police confirmed that he is expected to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on August 21, 2026.

Gibbins was elected as a Reform UK councillor during the May 2026 local elections. Although he was initially suspended by the party after the post came to light, he was reinstated in June after apologising and receiving a final written warning.

In a previous statement, Reform UK said Gibbins acknowledged that the post was “made in extremely poor taste” and admitted it reflected poor judgment.

Following the criminal charge, a spokesperson for Reform UK said the party is aware of the situation and will closely monitor the outcome of the court proceedings.

The case has attracted significant attention, with many awaiting the court’s decision on the charge.
