The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that the 2027 general elections will be free, fair, and credible, stressing that the old practice of stockpiling Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will no longer influence election outcomes.
According to the commission, Nigeria’s electoral process has evolved significantly, making it impossible for anyone to manipulate election results simply by collecting or keeping PVCs belonging to other voters.
INEC explained that every voter must be properly accredited before voting, using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which verifies voters through fingerprint or facial recognition. This means that possession of another person’s PVC alone cannot be used to cast a vote.
The commission urged politicians to focus on engaging voters with credible campaigns and policies instead of relying on outdated methods to gain electoral advantage.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting transparent and credible elections in 2027 and encouraged all eligible Nigerians to participate peacefully in the democratic process.
