Suspected political thugs on Sunday attacked a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) distribution centre in Okuku, the headquarters of Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, making away with several packs of voter cards.
The incident occurred at Oyinlola DC Primary School, Ward 2, where officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were distributing PVCs to eligible voters.
According to eyewitnesses, the armed hoodlums stormed the venue and fired several gunshots into the air, causing panic among residents, voters, and election officials. They then seized packs of PVCs before fleeing the scene ahead of the arrival of security operatives.
Confirming the attack, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said about ten armed suspects invaded the centre and escaped with three packs of PVCs.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has strongly condemned the incident and ordered a full-scale investigation to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible.
Reacting to the development, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, Oluwatoyin Babalola, also condemned the attack. She said she was awaiting a detailed report on the incident and could not immediately confirm the exact number of PVCs stolen.
The attack comes just weeks before the Osun State governorship election, which is scheduled to hold on August 15, raising fresh concerns over election security in the state.
