Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has questioned why Nigerian government officials have not visited Boko Haram insurgents and armed bandits to negotiate peace, arguing that similar dialogue was used to end militancy in the Niger Delta.
Speaking on the country’s security challenges, Gumi recalled that former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo engaged with Niger Delta militants during efforts to restore peace in the region. According to him, those negotiations helped pave the way for amnesty programmes and a reduction in violence.
He questioned who would be willing to extend similar dialogue to Boko Haram members and bandits operating across northern Nigeria, insisting that military action alone has not ended the insurgency. Gumi maintained that negotiation remains a viable path to achieving lasting peace.
The cleric, who has previously visited bandit camps as part of his dialogue efforts, has consistently advocated a non-military approach to tackling insecurity. His position has attracted criticism from many Nigerians, while he insists he does not support terrorism but only seeks peaceful solutions to the country’s security crisis.
