The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has directed police officers across the country to take decisive action against anyone found carrying illegal firearms as part of efforts to tackle rising insecurity.

According to the directive, officers are to confront armed suspects and, where necessary, use force against individuals found in possession of illegal weapons who pose a threat or resist arrest. The order is aimed at strengthening the fight against armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, cultism, and other violent crimes.

The IGP stressed that the police remain committed to protecting lives and property while enforcing the law. He urged officers to remain professional, vigilant, and operate within established rules of engagement during security operations.

The directive comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of illegal firearms and the increasing activities of criminal groups in different parts of the country. Security agencies have continued to intensify operations to recover illegal weapons and restore public safety.

The police also encouraged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could help identify criminals and prevent violent crimes.
