A Nigerian nurse, Emmanuel Ndubuisi, has been honoured with a national bravery award in the United Kingdom after risking his life to save a patient during a fire at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
The incident happened in August last year when a female patient in her 50s allegedly tried to use an e-cigarette while connected to an oxygen supply, causing a sudden fire that ignited around her head.
Acting quickly, Emmanuel disconnected the patient’s oxygen supply and used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames before they could spread throughout the hospital ward.
The patient suffered burns to her head and received treatment but escaped more serious injuries thanks to the nurse’s swift response.
Photos from the scene showed the intensity of the fire, with the oxygen mask and tubing melted by the flames and scorch marks left on the hospital room floor.
In recognition of his courage and quick thinking, Emmanuel was presented with a national bravery award for preventing what could have become a major hospital disaster.
