The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has criticised politicians seeking to become Nigeria’s president without having a proper understanding of the country’s communities and the challenges facing ordinary citizens.
Obi made the remarks during a town hall meeting in Ebonyi State, where he questioned the level of connection some presidential aspirants have with Nigerians at the grassroots.
According to the former Anambra State governor, some politicians are eager to contest for the presidency but may not even know the locations of communities such as Abakaliki, Ikwo and Nkalagu.
He stressed that aspiring leaders must understand the people they intend to govern by visiting communities, listening to their concerns and experiencing their challenges firsthand.
Obi explained that the town hall meeting was organised to give residents an opportunity to express their needs and share the problems affecting their daily lives.
He further emphasised that good leadership should be centred on the actual demands of the people rather than decisions made by politicians without consulting those they govern.
“Leadership must not be by supply; it should be by demand,” Obi declared, stressing the importance of people-oriented governance and direct engagement with citizens.
