Peter Obi Questions Spending ₦5 Million on Project Commissioning, Says Money Could Build More Classrooms

News

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explained why he avoided spending heavily on media publicity and elaborate project commissioning ceremonies during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

Speaking during a radio interview, Obi said public funds should be prioritised for projects that directly benefit citizens rather than expensive celebrations and ceremonies.

To illustrate his point, the former Anambra State governor used the construction of a five-classroom block as an example. He argued that if ₦10 million was spent on building the classrooms, the additional ₦5 million that could be used for a commissioning ceremony would be better invested in providing more educational facilities.

Obi questioned the rationale behind spending large sums of public money to celebrate completed projects when the same resources could be channelled into addressing pressing developmental needs.

According to him, responsible leadership requires making decisions that prioritise the welfare of the people and ensure that public resources are used efficiently.

His comments have once again highlighted the debate over government spending, public accountability and the need to prioritise essential infrastructure, particularly in the education sector.
