Security operatives on Monday reportedly opened fire to disperse protesters demanding the release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in Abuja.The demonstrators, led by human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, had gathered in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory under the banner of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement.
Witnesses said the protesters were peacefully demanding Kanu’s freedom before a combined team of soldiers, police officers, and other security personnel arrived at the scene. The operatives allegedly fired live rounds and tear gas to break up the crowd, sending people fleeing for safety.It was not immediately clear if there were casualties or arrests as of press time.
The protest comes amid renewed calls for the Federal Government to obey court orders granting bail to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, who has been in detention since 2021.Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
