The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced former school teacher, Nwatu Isaac, to life imprisonment for defiling an eight-year-old pupil of El-Bossaa Nursery and Primary School in Epe.

Justice Rahman Oshodi delivered the judgment on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after finding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court also ordered that Isaac’s name be entered in the Lagos State Sex Offenders Register.

The offence was said to have occurred on March 10, 2022, inside the school’s male toilet. According to evidence accepted by the court, Isaac had previously taught the girl and also transported pupils from the school on his motorcycle.

The prosecution told the court that Isaac lured the child into the toilet, where he sexually assaulted her. The girl later reported the incident to her father after returning home from school.

The court considered the testimony of the child, her mother, medical evidence and other evidence presented during the trial. Justice Oshodi found the child’s account consistent and sufficiently corroborated by other evidence.

The judge rejected Isaac’s denial that he entered the school premises beyond the gate, noting that his own evidence placed him at the school around the time of the incident. The court also dismissed other aspects of the defence case.

During sentencing, Justice Oshodi said Isaac had abused the trust placed in him as a former teacher and as someone trusted by parents to transport their children.

Isaac was convicted under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which provides for life imprisonment for unlawful sexual intercourse with a child.

The court further directed the prosecution to take immediate steps under the Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law, 2022, following a complaint by the victim’s mother that she and her daughter had allegedly faced intimidation from some school staff. The judge, however, made clear that the court made no finding on that particular allegation.
