Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to embrace responsible waste-management practices and reduce food waste as the nation joined the global community in commemorating World Cleanup Day 2026.
Speaking in a message to mark the occasion, the First Lady emphasized the need for individuals, families, and communities to play active roles in keeping the environment clean and sustainable.
She noted that reducing food waste has become increasingly important at a time when climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply chains around the world.
According to her, millions of people face food insecurity despite large quantities of food being wasted daily. She urged citizens to adopt more conscious consumption habits, preserve food properly, and avoid unnecessary waste.
Oluremi Tinubu also encouraged Nigerians to dispose of refuse responsibly, stressing that proper waste disposal helps protect public health, prevent environmental pollution, and create cleaner communities.
She called on citizens to support environmental-cleanup efforts and work together to build a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.
World Cleanup Day is observed annually to promote environmental awareness and inspire collective action toward reducing waste and protecting the planet.
