Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency over the increasing circulation of counterfeit and substandard drugs and consumer products across Nigeria.
Adeyanju expressed concern over the dangers posed by fake medicines, warning that the situation has become a major public health challenge that threatens the lives of millions of Nigerians. According to him, the continued presence of counterfeit products in markets and pharmacies points to serious lapses in regulation and enforcement.
He further urged the Federal Government to take decisive action by overhauling key regulatory institutions responsible for monitoring and controlling the quality of products in the country.
The activist specifically called for the removal of the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), as well as the heads of other regulatory agencies, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). He argued that the widespread availability of fake and substandard products reflects a significant failure in the system.
Adeyanju maintained that stronger oversight, stricter enforcement measures, and accountability among regulatory agencies are necessary to tackle the problem and restore public confidence in the safety of products sold in Nigeria.
His remarks have sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians expressing concern about the dangers of counterfeit drugs and the need for more effective regulation to protect consumers.
