A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Katsina has ordered the remand of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) lecturer and public affairs commentator, Dr. Bashir Kurfi, over allegations that he made defamatory statements against the Katsina State Government.
Dr. Kurfi was arraigned by the Katsina State Police Command on charges of defamation and injurious falsehood after he allegedly claimed during a Trust TV interview on June 24, 2026, that the state government sponsored some bandit leaders to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the police described the allegation as false, malicious, and capable of damaging the reputation of the Katsina State Government and its people. He was charged under Sections 308 and 309(1) of the Katsina State Penal Code.
Dr. Kurfi pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read in court.
The prosecution asked the court to remand the defendant in police custody while investigations continue, arguing that granting bail at this stage could affect the investigation.
Chief Magistrate Zaharaddeen Kofar Soro granted the request, ordering that Dr. Kurfi remain in police custody pending further investigation.
The case was adjourned until Monday, July 14, 2026, for continuation of proceedings.
