A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has granted bail in the sum of ₦150 million to a 67-year-old UK-based Nigerian woman, Mrs. Mary Yetunde Barek, who is standing trial over allegations of trafficking 13 kilograms of cocaine concealed as plantain.
Justice Friday Ogazi approved the bail application and ordered that the defendant provide two sureties in like sum. The court stated that both sureties must reside within its jurisdiction, own landed property valued at not less than ₦150 million, and submit proof of ownership alongside evidence of tax payments covering the last three years.

As part of the bail conditions, Barek was directed to surrender her British international passport to the court and remain in Nigeria throughout the duration of the trial unless granted permission to travel.
According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Barek allegedly attempted to export 13 kilograms of cocaine to the United Kingdom through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Prosecutors claimed the illicit substance was disguised as plantain and was intended for shipment aboard a Virgin Atlantic flight bound for the UK.
The anti-narcotics agency further alleged that the defendant transported the consignment from her residence on Alhaji Azeez Ajanaku Street in Okota, Lagos, to the airport on June 28, 2026, during the outward clearance of passengers at Terminal 2.

Barek was arraigned before the court in August and pleaded not guilty to the charges. The NDLEA maintains that the alleged offence violates Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act.
During proceedings, the prosecution opposed her request for bail, while her defence counsel urged the court to consider her health condition. After reviewing submissions from both parties, Justice Ogazi granted bail under the stated conditions.
The court also ruled that the defendant must not leave Nigeria without prior approval while the case remains before the court.
The matter has been adjourned for further hearing as the trial continues.
