The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 25-year-old female student who was found dead on June 18 in the Onitsha area of the state in what is suspected to be a case of suicide.
According to the police, a note believed to have been written by the deceased was recovered at the scene. The message reportedly detailed emotional distress following the collapse of a relationship with a man identified only as Chigozie, whom she alleged she had undergone three abortions for before he ended their relationship.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death.
The police commissioner noted that the tragic development highlights the need for stronger parental guidance, moral upbringing, and emotional support systems for young people.
He urged parents and guardians to take a more active interest in the emotional well-being of their children and wards by paying closer attention to their social interactions, behavioural changes, and mental health challenges.
CP Orutugu also called on community leaders, educational institutions, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to strengthen advocacy, counselling, and mentorship programmes aimed at promoting positive values, resilience, and responsible living among youths.
Meanwhile, the police boss has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a thorough and discreet investigation.
