US, Iran Unveil 14-Point Peace Framework to End War, Begin Path to Long-Term Agreement

Foreign News Trending

The United States and Iran have released a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining a framework aimed at ending hostilities between both countries and laying the groundwork for a broader peace agreement.

The interim deal, signed by both sides, calls for an immediate end to military operations and opens a 60-day negotiation period during which a permanent settlement is expected to be negotiated.

According to the agreement, both nations have pledged to cease hostile actions against one another, respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and refrain from interference in internal affairs.

A key provision of the deal is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Iran has agreed to restore safe passage for commercial vessels, while the United States will lift its naval blockade and reduce military restrictions affecting Iranian maritime traffic.

The framework also addresses Iran’s nuclear programme. Tehran reaffirmed that it will not develop nuclear weapons and agreed to work with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on oversight and the handling of enriched uranium stockpiles.

On the economic front, the United States pledged to support Iran’s recovery through sanctions relief and financial measures tied to progress in future negotiations. Reports indicate that reconstruction assistance worth up to $300 billion could be made available if a final agreement is reached.

The memorandum also establishes a joint mechanism to oversee implementation of the agreement and monitor compliance by both parties. Any final settlement is expected to be backed by a binding United Nations Security Council resolution.

Despite the breakthrough, officials on both sides have stressed that the memorandum is only an interim framework and that either party can still walk away if negotiations fail during the 60-day period. The coming weeks are expected to focus on the sequencing of sanctions relief, nuclear commitments, and regional security arrangements.

The agreement marks the most significant diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran in years and is being viewed as a major step toward de-escalating tensions in the Middle East.
