A decomposing body was discovered inside the trunk of an abandoned vehicle near Iran’s FIFA World Cup training base in Tijuana, Mexico, sparking security concerns during the ongoing tournament.

The grim discovery was made on Friday in a supermarket parking lot directly opposite Estadio Caliente, where Iran’s national team has been training ahead of its World Cup fixtures. Authorities found the body inside a gray Toyota SUV with California license plates after a patrol unit inspected the vehicle.

According to local prosecutors, the victim was wrapped in a black bag and showed signs of violence. Investigators believe the vehicle had been abandoned for several days before officers noticed suspicious activity around it, including a strong odor and the presence of flies.

Forensic experts dressed in protective suits examined the scene before removing the body for further investigation. Police have yet to identify the victim or announce any arrests related to the case.

The incident occurred just a short distance from Iran’s team hotel and training facilities. Reports indicate that the team’s heavily guarded convoy left the stadium shortly after the discovery, although officials have not confirmed whether additional security measures will be introduced.

Iran relocated its World Cup training camp from Arizona to Tijuana due to political tensions and security concerns surrounding its participation in the tournament. The team is preparing for its opening World Cup match against New Zealand.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
