The Edo State Police Command has uncovered a staged kidnapping after investigating a report of a missing person involving an employee of Dibecs Industry Limited, located at Km 162, along the Auchi–Okene Expressway in Okpella.
According to the police, the incident was reported when the employee suddenly became unreachable, sparking fears that he had been abducted. The company raised the alarm, prompting officers to launch an immediate investigation and deploy operatives to trace the victim’s whereabouts.
However, as enquiries progressed, the case began to unravel. Investigators discovered inconsistencies in the supposed kidnapping story and tracked movements linked to the missing employee. He was eventually located and taken into custody for questioning.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed that no kidnapping took place. He admitted to staging his own abduction after losing ₦1.3 million to gambling. The fake kidnapping, police said, was intended to buy time and possibly raise money to cover the loss.
The Edo State Police Command condemned the act, describing it as a criminal attempt to mislead law enforcement and cause unnecessary panic. The command warned members of the public against engaging in such deceitful acts, stressing that anyone found fabricating crimes would be investigated and prosecuted accordingly.
Police also used the opportunity to caution residents about the dangers of gambling and urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing accurate and truthful information.
