The Yobe State Police Command has arrested 26 suspects for illegally felling trees in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of the state, in a renewed effort to curb desertification and enforce existing environmental laws.
According to the Command, the arrests followed sustained surveillance and coordinated operations targeting activities that contribute to environmental degradation, particularly the indiscriminate cutting of trees for firewood and charcoal.
Police authorities said illegal tree felling remains a serious challenge in parts of the state, worsening desert encroachment, soil erosion and climate-related hardships faced by rural communities. They stressed that the state government has clear laws prohibiting such practices in order to protect the environment and safeguard livelihoods.
The suspects were apprehended at different locations within Tarmuwa LGA while allegedly engaging in unlawful logging activities. Items recovered during the operation reportedly include freshly cut trees and tools used for felling.
The Command warned that it will continue to clamp down on individuals and groups involved in activities that threaten environmental sustainability, adding that offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Residents were urged to support government efforts by reporting environmental crimes and adopting alternative, eco-friendly means of livelihood, as the fight against desertification remains a collective responsibility.
